PIA Issue Update OSHA Ergonomics
In 2001, PIA joined with a host of small business groups to argue for the repeal of a regulation on ergonomics promulgated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in the waning days of the Clinton Administration. Opponents said the regulation would impose hundreds of millions of dollars in compliance expenses on businesses. The effort was successful, as Congress repealed the regulation. Since that time, the U.S. Labor Department has opted for a voluntary approach, issuing industry-specific guidelines. Now, Roll Call reports that eight of the nine Democratic presidential candidates support developing a new federal ergonomic standard. We will continue to monitor for developments on this issue.
