Colorado Gets New Insurance Commissioner
Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper has named Michael Conway as the state’s interim insurance commissioner. Conway takes over from Marguerite Salazar, who had been serving both as insurance commissioner and as executive director of the state’s Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA). Salazar will now exclusively run DORA.
Conway has been the insurance division's deputy commissioner for consumer and compliance services since March 2016. Before that, he was an assistant attorney general in the insurance unit at the state attorney general’s office. He guided the insurance division’s strategy for retaining individual-market insurers despite the upheaval around health-care law coming from Washington, D.C., making Colorado one of the few states to maintain the same lineup of insurers on its exchange in 2017 and 2018.
