Walmart in Talks to Acquire Humana
Walmart is in preliminary talks to potentially acquire insurer Humana, according to people familiar with the matter. If a deal is proposed and regulators and shareholders endorse it, Walmart would be poised to become one of the nation's largest health insurers. The retailer also would have access to valuable data. Walmart currently is the nation's largest private employer, so a deal with Humana could allow the retailer to save on its own insurance plans. Walmart and Humana already partner on Medicare drug plans.
Humana, which had $53.8 billion in revenue last year, is the second-largest provider of private Medicare Advantage plans. Humana also owns its own pharmacy-benefit manager, which itself had revenue of about $21 billion last year.
